Our journey through Japan’s scenic heart begins at the enchanting Itchiku Kubota Art Museum, set amidst a tranquil forest at the base of Mount Fuji. This extraordinary museum celebrates the life and vision of Itchiku Kubota, a textile master who revived the lost art of Tsujigahana silk dyeing. Within its elegant wooden halls, visitors are surrounded by radiant kimono masterpieces that capture the beauty of nature and the passage of time. Framed by gardens, waterfalls, and views of Mount Fuji, the museum itself is a serene work of art—an invitation to reflect on the harmony between creativity and the natural world.

For lunch, we savor Hōtō, a comforting Yamanashi specialty. This rustic noodle stew—made with thick, hand-cut noodles and a medley of seasonal vegetables simmered in miso broth—embodies the warmth and flavor of Japan’s countryside. It’s a humble yet satisfying dish that perfectly complements the region’s mountain atmosphere and springtime charm.

In the afternoon, we journey through the mountain roads of Nagano to reach Narai-juku, one of the best-preserved post towns along the old Nakasendō Trail connecting Kyoto and Edo (Tokyo). Lined with wooden merchant houses and traditional inns, Narai-juku offers a glimpse into Edo-period Japan, when travelers rested here on their long journeys. As you stroll through the narrow streets, you’ll feel as though time has stood still—each storefront, lattice window, and sake shop whispering stories of centuries past. Especially during cherry blossom season, the soft pink petals drifting over the wooden eaves create a scene of pure nostalgia and timeless beauty.

Day 5

Today, our Japan Cherry Blossom Tour unfolds through the heart of the Japanese Alps, where mountain scenery, traditional villages, and timeless craftsmanship come together in the soft glow of spring.

We begin the morning at the elegant Matsumoto Castle, one of Japan’s oldest original fortresses and a designated National Treasure. Nicknamed the “Crow Castle” for its striking black façade, the structure rises gracefully against the backdrop of the Northern Alps. In spring, rows of cherry trees surrounding the moat burst into bloom, their reflections dancing on the still waters—a picture-perfect harmony of samurai heritage and seasonal beauty.

Next, we journey to Daio Wasabi Farm in Azumino, Japan’s largest and most picturesque wasabi plantation. Fed by pure spring water from the Alps, its lush green fields and gentle watermills create a refreshing pastoral landscape. Stroll along the cool streams, learn how wasabi is cultivated, and taste local delicacies such as wasabi soba noodles or wasabi ice cream—a refreshing and uniquely regional experience.

Continuing deeper into the mountains, we travel to the UNESCO World Heritage village of Shirakawa-go. Famous for its traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses, whose steep thatched roofs resemble hands pressed together in prayer, this serene hamlet offers a rare glimpse into rural Japan as it once was. Surrounded by blooming cherry trees and clear mountain air, Shirakawa-go embodies the quiet charm and enduring spirit of Japan’s countryside.

As evening approaches, we arrive in Kanazawa, a city where samurai culture and artistic refinement continue to thrive. Known for its preserved historical districts, exquisite gardens, and centuries-old crafts, Kanazawa welcomes you with a sense of elegance and anticipation for the cultural discoveries that await tomorrow.

Today’s journey immerses us in the timeless elegance of Kanazawa, a city that has gracefully preserved the spirit of the samurai while blossoming into one of Japan’s most refined cultural centers. Here, history, craftsmanship, and spring beauty blend in perfect harmony.

We begin the morning at the distinguished Nomura Samurai Residence in the Nagamachi district. Once home to a prominent samurai family, this beautifully restored estate offers a glimpse into the refined lifestyle of Kanazawa’s warrior class. Inside, admire heirlooms such as armor, calligraphy, and a magnificent traditional garden often listed among Japan’s most exquisite private gardens—a peaceful retreat reflecting true samurai aesthetics.

Enjoy strolling through boutiques selling gold-leaf souvenirs, sweets, and fine ceramics while soaking in the nostalgic atmosphere.

We conclude the day at Kenrokuen Garden, one of Japan’s celebrated “Three Great Gardens.” Designed to embody the six virtues of ideal landscape beauty—spaciousness, seclusion, artistry, antiquity, water, and panoramic views—Kenrokuen is breathtaking in springtime. Cherry blossoms arch gracefully over stone bridges and tranquil ponds, capturing the poetic essence of the season and the harmony of nature and design.

Today’s journey unfolds in the mountain town of Takayama, where centuries of craftsmanship and local pride come alive during the city’s renowned Spring Festival. Celebrated as one of Japan’s most beautiful festivals, it showcases the artistry and devotion of generations of Takayama artisans.

As you explore the lively streets, admire the magnificent yatai—elaborately decorated festival floats that stand as moving works of art. Each float is adorned with intricate wood carvings, lacquer finishes, and gold embellishments, reflecting the refined skill and aesthetic sensibility of the region. The highlight of the day is the Karakuri Puppet Performance, in which mechanical dolls gracefully move and dance atop the floats, a tradition passed down for over three centuries. Surrounded by the sounds of festival music and the soft hues of cherry blossoms, the atmosphere is both vibrant and deeply cultural.

After experiencing the festival’s highlights, take a walk through Takayama’s Old Town, a beautifully preserved district where rows of Edo-period merchant houses and sake breweries line narrow streets.
