Today, we head west to explore some of Japan’s most iconic cultural landmarks, beginning with the awe-inspiring Himeji Castle. Often referred to as the White Heron Castle for its elegant, white facade, this magnificent fortress is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site and a national treasure. Built in the early 1600s, Himeji Castle is the finest surviving example of feudal architecture in Japan, featuring original wooden interiors, strategic design, and sweeping views of the surrounding city. Walking its grounds offers an authentic glimpse into the legacy of the samurai era and Japan’s rich architectural heritage. After our time in Himeji, we continue on to Hiroshima, a city known for its powerful history and vibrant local culture. In the evening, enjoy a hands-on introduction to Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki, a savory layered pancake filled with noodles, cabbage, and a variety of toppings. Typically prepared before your eyes on a teppan grill, this regional specialty is both a culinary and cultural highlight — a beloved comfort food that reflects the heart of western Japan. We conclude our day in Hiroshima, where you’ll check into your hotel and have the evening at leisure. Today’s journey combines historic preservation and local cuisine, offering a deeper understanding of Japan’s enduring traditions and regional flavors. |

Our anime-inspired journey begins at Hōman-gū Kamado Shrine in Dazaifu, Fukuoka—an increasingly popular pilgrimage site for fans of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. Sharing the same “Kamado” name as the series’ beloved protagonist, Tanjiro Kamado, the shrine has become a special place for fans visiting Japan. As we walk through the torii gates and into the forested grounds, you’ll notice ema (wooden prayer plaques) adorned with illustrations and messages inspired by the series, creating a unique blend of traditional Shinto culture and modern anime fandom. Our journey then continues to Hita, Oita Prefecture, the hometown of Attack on Titan creator Hajime Isayama and a true pilgrimage destination for fans of the globally acclaimed series. We explore the Attack on Titan in Hita Museum, located in the heart of the creator’s hometown. The museum features original artwork, character sketches, and rare behind-the-scenes materials that trace the evolution of the story from manga to worldwide phenomenon. This immersive visit offers a deeper connection to the creative vision behind one of the most influential anime series of our time. Just outside Hita Station, we come face-to-face with the intense gaze of Levi Ackerman at his striking bronze statue. Captured in a dynamic, battle-ready pose, the statue has become an iconic landmark for fans. Surrounded by themed murals and plaques, it’s one of the most popular photo spots in Hita and a powerful symbol of the town’s pride in its connection to the series. The excitement continues with a powerful taiko drumming performance by a world-renowned troupe, staged against the dramatic volcanic landscape of Mount Aso. The thunderous rhythms echoing across the plateau create an electrifying fusion of sound, energy, and scenery—perfectly matching the epic scale and intensity that anime fans love. At Daikanbo, we take in sweeping panoramic views over Mount Aso’s vast caldera. On clear days, the rolling peaks and open skies stretch endlessly into the distance, offering a breathtaking natural finale that mirrors the grand themes of freedom, struggle, and resilience so often found in anime storytelling. |

We venture into one of Beppu’s most iconic attractions—the Beppu Hell Tour (Jigoku Meguri). We explore three of the area’s most famous “hells”: Umi Jigoku, known for its vivid cobalt-blue waters; Chinoike Jigoku, the oldest of the hot springs with its surreal blood-red pool; and Oniishibozu Jigoku, where gray mud bubbles ominously from the earth. Each spot offers a striking display of geothermal energy and showcases the raw beauty of Japan’s volcanic landscape. After taking in the dramatic sights, we enjoy a uniquely local culinary experience with a Jigoku Mushi lunch. Using the natural geothermal steam of Beppu, this traditional method of cooking locks in flavor and nutrients, resulting in a delicious and healthy meal. From fresh vegetables to savory dumplings and eggs, this lunch is both interactive and satisfying. In the afternoon, we board a scenic ferry for a relaxing cruise across the Seto Inland Sea to Matsuyama, offering views of the surrounding islands and coastline. The ferry ride is a tranquil interlude as we journey from Kyushu to Shikoku. Our day concludes with a visit to the historic Dogo Onsen, Japan’s oldest hot spring bathhouse. With over 1,000 years of history and architecture that inspired Studio Ghibli’s “Spirited Away,” this revered bathhouse invites us to unwind in soothing thermal waters. Surrounded by nostalgic shopping streets and traditional ryokan, Dogo Onsen offers the perfect end to a day rich in natural wonder and cultural heritage. |
