The Blue Pond in Biei, Hokkaido is a man-made pond with water that shines a bright blue depending on the seasons. The pond's blue color is said to be a result of the water from Biei River that flowed after a dam was constructed to prevent possible destruction caused by the near by Mt. Tokachi. The water in the pond mixed with the colloidal aluminum hydroxide in the ground, resulting in the unique blue hues of the water. During Typhoon Mindulle in 2016, the pond temporarily dropped in water level and the colors changed from blue to brown, but has returned to it's shimmering pastel colors since. The pond is a popular destination for tourists and photographers, as it provides a mythical like backdrop for wonderful shots and edits. The pond's appearance slightly changes depending on the weather's affect on the water, but is always a charming stop among tour groups through Hokkaido.
