Kodai-ji Temple is one of the many beautiful Japanese temples found in Kyoto's traditional Higashiyama district. It was constructed in 1605 in memory of Toyotomi Hideyoshi by the great political leader's wife, Nene. While most of the temple was destroyed by fire in 1789, the grounds still retains it's beauty and charms.
Apart from the stunning temple halls, Kodaiji features a small bamboo grove and a landscape garden with tea houses designed by leading, Japanese garden design masters. Many of the properties on Kodai-ji are designated as Important Cultural Assets while the gardens are a nationally designated ”Historic Site and Place of Scenic Beauty.” Kodai-ji also offers incredible, zen-styled illumination shows for guests on the garden grounds during the Spring cherry blossom season, August holidays, and late Summer months.
There are numerous spots along the temple grounds to find peace at mind during your vacation. The temple grounds are surrounded by lavish zen gardens, including a rock garden meant to represent the deep oceans around the island nation. On the other side waits an incredible Japanese garden filled with koi fish ponds, zen stones, Japanese flowers and trees, rolling hills, and pathways. Although Kodaiji isn't a famous cherry blossom hanami destination, the temple transforms during the Autumn months thanks to the numerous maple and pine trees. When exiting the temple through Nene's Path (named after Hideyoshi's wife), travelers will find themselves in the traditional Japanese streets of Higashiyama. Enjoy shopping for trinkets and cultural souvenirs, or stop into one of the museums displaying Kyoto crafts & arts.
