While some may think Manga and Comics are the same, manga is an important part of Japanese culture for all ages. There are many types of Manga in Japan that target different audiences. When a Manga is popular enough, it will likely turn into an Anime. When a manga or anime becomes really popular, it becomes translated in other languages for people of all ages to enjoy around the world. Below is a short list of the popular types of Manga & Anime!
Kodomo (translating as "children") is a genre directed at children. This genre tends to be simple and geared towards children, teaching morals and other values.
Shonen (translating as "few years") is a genre usually targeted towards boys under the age of 15. Many of these animes and mangas focus on a young hero on an exciting adventure or comedies revolving around the protagonist's life.
Seinen Anime and Manga are targeted towards young men over the age of 15. These animes and manga tend to be more violent or intense compared to the Shonen mangas and animes. While that is the case, many Seinen feature the same sub-genres as Shonen anime and manga, however tailored to a more mature audience.
Shojo (translating as "young girl") is a genre usually targeted towards girls under the age of 15. The counterpart towards Shonen manga and anime, this genre tends to have more romantic themes, but still include action, adventure, comedy, and other popular sub-genres. Shojos tend to feature a female lead, though there are occasionally male leads.
Anime and Manga in this genre are targeted towards adult women. Josei manga and anime usually feature slice-of-life or romantic sub genres, usually keeping more realistic themes. This genre can range between light, comedic works, to darker, more serious subjects.
Hentai is a genre directed towards male adults, featuring overly sexual characters, sexual images and content, and plots focused around sex.
Often refers to people with hobbies such as anime, manga, and games, but there is no clear definition.
