Karaoke

Karaoke is a very popular activity among the Japanese, enjoyed by those of all ages. It is the singing of songs to empty tracks while the lyrics are displayed on screens. Though karaoke is becoming increasingly popular in America, Japan takes it to a whole another level. Rather than just singing at bars, in Japan, karaoke establishments consist of private rooms for groups of all sizes to enjoy singing with just their group. These karaoke boxes are each equipped with microphones, often multiple to allow for duets and group singing, and the karaoke player which allows them to look up and enter the songs they wish to sing. Though many karaoke boxes have become more technologically savvy these days, some karaoke boxes may still use big karaoke books and remotes to enter songs. The song selections available at most karaoke establishments are generally pretty diverse, making available a great number of English songs as well as Korean, Chinese, and other languages. The karaoke box rooms also feature a telephone with which guests can call the front desk to order food and beverages. Many Japanese spend hours and hours at karaoke with friends, and sometimes even spend the night if they miss the last train.
