Department Stores, also known as depāto or hyakkaten, are large buildings usually five to ten stories high filled with different kinds of shops and boutiques. Department stores in Japan generally carry goods and brands on the higher-end. Most stores focus on fashion and apparel including both casual and formal wear. As you climb up the floors, you will likely find interior goods and furniture stores as well as toy stores. The top level of department stores are usually a restaurant floor with all kinds of cafes and dining options to choose from. The restaurants are usually reasonably priced and people often go to department stores just for this floor.

Some department stores also have an open access roof top area where guests can go to relax or enjoy tea or coffee. These outdoor areas are a great way to relax and enjoy the view of the city in between shopping for souvenirs and gifts. Some department stores even hold events on the rooftops to attract more customers.

Another very popular floor in department stores is its basement. All kinds of food, snacks, and desserts are sold in the basement floor. People often go to department stores to purchase high quality delicacies for gifts for omotenashi, or gifts for guests.
