Kokura Castle was built in 1602 under the commands of Japanese samurai Hosokawa Tadaoki. The castle was burnt down during a battle between Kokura Clan and Choshu Clan in 1866 and was fully restored in 1990. The restoration though drastically changed the look of Kokura Castle from its original look to make it more visually appealing. The castle has a gorgeous four-tiered, six-storied donjon.
