Komachi-dori

Komachi-dori is home to over 250 restaurants, cafes, and shops in the quiet town of Kamakura. Running parallel to Wakamiya-oji street, the main access point to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, this shopping district is the place to go when looking for local souvenirs or Kamakura specialties. The stores are split between crafts, pottery, pickles, general goods, clothing, accessories, and various Western and Japanese style foods and desserts. While some stores carry every day goods and trinkets, there are also stores with higher-end traditional products like Kamakura lacquer-works, locally brewed beer, and paper crafts with washi paper. Among the list of things to do while exploring Komachi-dori, we recommend: 1) buying snacks from Kamakura Mameya, a bean shop that is commonly frequented by locals and tourists alike for souvenirs and snacks. 2) Try the various desserts like Kamakura's Hydrangea or Sweet Purple Potato ice-cream. And 3) eat Shirasu-donburi, a Kamakura specialty fish rice-bowl, and buy Shirasu for gifts back home. The Shirasu is a popular snack or meal in Kamakura, and is commonly refered to as whitebait in English. Shirasu are tiny fish, anchovies or sardines or round herring, that are abundant on the beaches by Kamakura. For the extra daring dinners, we recommend trying Tempura Shirasu, a special fried version of shirasu enjoyed on rice. After you finish all your snacking, drop by the Ghibli Store dedicated to the world of Totoro & friends. This is considered a must for any Ghibli fan in Kamakura.
