Kawagoe Candy Alley (Kashiya Yokocho) is a nostalgic lane lined with traditional Japanese sweet shops, handmade snacks, and retro flavors that recall the charm of old-fashioned Japan. Located in the historic district of Little Edo, it is one of Kawagoe’s most beloved attractions and an essential stop on day trips from Tokyo.
Candy Alley dates back to the early 20th century, when more than 70 confectionery shops produced handmade treats for the local community. Today, the alley preserves that warm, nostalgic atmosphere with stores selling traditional candies rarely found elsewhere.
Candy Alley is a delightful stop for travelers who enjoy traditional flavors, nostalgic streets, and family-friendly foodie exploration.
Candy Alley (Kashiya Yokocho) is one of Kawagoe’s signature attractions and a must-visit for anyone exploring the area. After enjoying Kawagoe’s famous sweet potatoes, stroll into this charming lane filled with nostalgic dagashi-ya candy shops.
These shops offer a wide variety of traditional Japanese snacks: colorful candies, rice crackers, karintō, ice cream, and sweet bean cakes— all at inexpensive prices. Many also sell retro toys such as spinning tops, menko, marbles, and handicraft kits, making it a joyful destination for both children and adults.
Candy Alley has deep historical roots. After the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, Tokyo faced a significant shortage of sweets. Candy makers in Kashiya Yokocho supplied the city, leading to the growth of more than 70 confectionery shops at its peak.
Today, about 20 stores remain, preserving the nostalgic charm of early Showa-era Japan. In 2001, the aroma of handmade sweets drifting through the alley was selected for Japan’s prestigious “Top 100 Scent & Scenery” list.
Kawagoe Candy Alley is more than a snack street—it’s a nostalgic taste of Japan’s traditional sweets culture. Add it to your Kawagoe day trip or Japan Deluxe Tours itinerary for a flavorful and memorable experience.
