Located in the Bay of Toba, in the Shima Peninsula, is Mikimoto Pearl Island. On Mikimoto Pearl Island is the Pearl Museum, an excellent place to learn about pearls and pearl cultivation. You can also learn about Mikimoto Kokichi, the first cultivator of pearls, and whom the island is named after. Next to the Pearl Museum is the Pearl Plaza where you can purchase a variety of pearls. Here at Mikimoto Pearl Island you can even witness pearl cultivation through performances by "Ama", or female pearl divers who also harvest oysters and other seafood.
