Nijo Fish Market in Sapporo is the Hokkaido equivalent of Tokyo's Tsukiji Fish Market. Hokkaido is well-known for having some of the freshest seafood in Japan, making Nijo Fish Market an ideal place to sample Hokkaido specialties. The market is located close to Sapporo's Odori Park and is lined with stalls selling uni (sea urchin), crabs, fish roe and eggs, salmon, kaisen donburi (seafood bowls), and fresh produce. Open between 7AM to 6PM, the market includes restaurants called Noren Yokocho
in addition to the vendors selling produce. Patrons can enjoy fresh crab, oysters, sake, and other great seafood dishes for breakfast or lunch before shopping for groceries. Guests are encouraged to try the Kaisen Donburi, which literally translates to Seafood Bowl.
Serving the best fish of the season on a warm bed of rice, Kaisen Donburi is a great way to sample the flavors of Hokkaido.
You'll notice lines of vendors selling fresh seafood and crab each day at the market. While the market is technically open from 7AM~6PM, the market is made of vendors who select their own times to show up. Therefore, if you plan on going during your Japan tour, it would be better to go earlier than later. Crab in Hokkaido is said to be specialty, so be sure to sample them at the source while visiting the market!
