Tokyo Ginza | Silver Place - Shopping District

Ginza lies in the heart of Tokyo, extending from Kyobashi to Shimbashi and is now a leading shopping district in Tokyo. “Ginza” literally means "Silver Place," deriving its name from the silver mint founded in the district in 1612. After a fire burned down most of the district in 1872, the government helped recreate the area with more modern designs including fire-resistant buildings, European-style architecture, larger streets, and a shopping promenade. While most of the buildings have changed over time, there are still some remnants like the Wako Building that houses the iconic Hattori-Clock Tower (built by the founder of Seiko Watches, Kintaro Hattori). Many of the finest shops including department stores and specialty stores are on the streets of Ginza. This high fashion district is a perfect stop for those fashionistas looking to shop at high quality stores. Ginza also features tea houses, bars, cabarets, a Kabuki theater, art galleries and so on in this district. It's not uncommon to go to Ginza just to kill time or enjoy a weekend date.
