University of Tokyo is considered Japan's most prestigious university. It is located in Bunkyo, Tokyo and is a public research university. It was founded in 1877 as University of Tokyo but was renamed Imperial University then Tokyo Imperial University when the imperial system was created. The university returned to its original name of University of Tokyo when Japan was defeated in World War II.
University of Tokyo continuously ranks as one of the top schools not only in Asia but in the world. The university is also often mentioned for its prestigiousness in Japanese television shows and media. Students from University of Tokyo also are often representative of Japan's most highly educated individuals. Many government officials are unsurprisingly alumni of University of Tokyo. The university has also hosted the 1964 Summer Olympics' running section of the modern pentathlon event.
