Yamaguchi Akiyoshido | Great Limestone Cave

Akiyoshido is one of Japan's largest and longest limestone caves, measuring approximately 8.7 km (5.4 miles). The cave is located below the surface of Akiyoshidai, a large area of karst topography in Yamaguchi. 1 km of the cave can be accessed by tourists. The paths have been paved and there is sufficient lighting to navigate oneself through the cave. For the more adventurous, a more difficult, slippery path can be accessed for a small fee which rewards the visitors with a great view from an area higher than the ordinary path. Both paths though provide great views and allow you to see various amazing natural formations like a cobalt blue water path, underground waterfalls, and terraces of limestone pools filled with water. For those planning on visiting, keep in mind that the inside of the cave is chilly throughout the year, averaging about 62 degrees Fahrenheit so a light jacket is recommended.
