Maintaining the traditional buildings from the Edo and Meiji period, Akagawara in Tottori preserves the history of Japan's past with the white wall storehouses and red-tiled roof buildings. The buildings have been renovated on the inside, but maintain the original facade and exterior designs. The former warehouses have been converted to trendy cafes offering snacks and sweets, art galleries, traditional stores, and gift shops. For travelers interested in embracing the traditional atmosphere of the Red-Tile warehouse can also rent Kimono to wear while walking around the Akagawara area. Similar to the preserved districts of Kyoto or Higashi-Chaya, Tottori's Akagawara is a link to Japan's traditional past while enjoying the perks of modern luxuries.

The architecture and design of the district have gathered much attention to the point the area has been listed as an important district for preservation thanks to the beautiful red-tile buildings. Building Akagawara 10 is dedicated to providing guests with pamphlets and information about the area, and is the location of the Kurayoshi White Walls District Tourism Information Center. This is the go-to place to learn more about Akagawara's history and where to find the best cup of coffee, snacks, or sake along the shopping district. While there are other cities that maintain the original architecture from the past, the bright red tiles and white walls of Akagawara are a unique fixture in Japanese history. Fans of the classic architecture can enjoy a stop at Akagawara during a private Japan tour with us through Tottori!
