Museum Dedicated to the History & Culture of Date

The Date Rekishi-no-Mori is a rest area and museum dedicated to the history and culture in Date. Surrounded by castle stone, the Date Historical Park is filled with information about the Samurai and indigo dying history of the Date. Date is credited as the only Indigo manufacture left in Hokkaido and produces about 30% of Japan's indigo plants. The Historical Park offers guests workshops to try the traditional techniques of Date indigo dying. Visitors can make a bandanna or handkerchief using tie dye and wooden blocks, or opt for more difficult projects like T-shirts or shawls. These creations are a perfect souvenir of Date and are a great way to take home a piece of Japanese culture with you.

In fact, at the historical park you can watch expert sword-makers use nothing but iron and heat to create incredible blades and swords. The historical park also has a memorial for Tomiko Miyao, a Naoki Prize winning author, in addition to shrines, displays, and other attractions.
