River-less Waterfall

River-less Waterfall

Furepe Waterfall is a special waterfall in the western coast of the Shiretoko Peninsula fed by ground water that surfaces just at the top of the waterfall, earning the nickname Maiden's Tears Waterfall for the way water flows out the cracks. Furepe means Red Water in Ainu Language, named after the sunset light reflecting on the surface of the falls. The waterfall is fed entirely from ground water, resulting in no visible rivers leading to the drop. The 100 meter high fall can be viewed from an observation deck above the falls that can be reached from a nature trail hike, or via sightseeing boat at the base of the falls. Close to the falls is the Shiretoko Nature Center where guests can learn about the national park, stop for food at the onsite restaurant, or grab a souvenir from the gift shop. The Nature Center is also close to the Wildlife Protection Center, Shiretoko 100 Square-Meter Trust House, and the Path for Growing Forest. Discover this wondrous waterfall while exploring Hokkaido on a fully-escorted custom Japan Tour package through the breathtaking Furepe Falls.
