Formed through volcanic activity around 6,000 years ago, Lake Akan is a breathtaking lake in the Akan National Park in Kushiro. The lake is home to Marimo, a rare species of algae that grows into beautiful green balls. The marimo can grow as large as soccer balls when left alone for a few centuries, and are a highlight to see when around the lake (as seen in the image to the left). In addition to the marimo, Lake Akan sports a vast forest of spruce and white fir trees to compliment the lake's beauty.
Lake Akan is also well known for the hot-spring town Akankohan located around the lake. As the only town around, the area is rich in hot-springs that provide guests with breathtaking views of the lake from the comfort of a hot-spring bath. The quiet atmosphere and tranquil nature makes the views from Akankohan the perfect compliment while relaxing in the volcanic waters.
In addition to the forest and marimo, two mountains by the lake add to the beauty and provide nature lovers a chance to engage in a scenic hike around the are. Oakan (Male Mountain) and Meakan (Female Mountain) are two volcanoes that formed Lake Akan with trails guests can explore. Oakan offers a trail from the eastern end of Lake Akan, while Meakan offers two trails from the west. Both hikes take around a half a day each, and can only be accessed between June to October. Outside of this period, hikers are advised not to travel on either trail due to severe weather conditions (i.e. snowfall or landslides). Hikers should check with the tourist information center for the volcano or their travel agents to ensure their safety before attempting to hike the trails.
