Kitakami is a city located in south-central Iwate Prefecture famous for its cherry blossoms. More than 10,000 cherry blossoms trees bloom beautifully in Tenshochi Park of Kitakami. The trees are planted along the road parallel to the river creating a tunnel of cherry blossoms. The cherry blossom trees of Kitakami usually bloom in April and last for about a week or two. During these weeks Kitakami attracts people from Iwate and neighboring area who wish to walk through the beautiful cherry blossom tunnel and relax under the flowers. Food vendors and festivities take place at the ends of the tunnel allowing for both a relaxing yet festive environment.
