Tendaiji Temple

Tendaiji Temple, built in 728 by a monk Gyoki, is considered to be Iwate's oldest temple. At the time of construction, Tendaiji Temple had many buildings, halls, and Buddha statues. However, during the Meiji era when the anti-Buddhist movements took place, many of the buildings and statues were destroyed. Restoration and preservation efforts have helped restore the temple back to its former glory.

When you approach the temple you will face a statue of Yakushi Nyorai, Buddha of Medicine and Healing. Yakushi Nyorai's impressive statue though is not considered the main statue, and is instead the statue of Shokannon, God of Mercy. Both statues though are very impressive and preserve the authenticity from being carved back in the 11th century.
