Located in Komatsu in the Ishikawa Prefecture, the Moss Village is a rural area in a town called Hiyou where moss grows all over the town. The highlights of the Moss Village are the Forest of Wisdom and the Wisdom House. The Forest of Wisdom is one of the best places to see various Japanese moss, attracting visitors both local and international to the spectacle. The project aims to bring together all nationalities to share their wisdom with the next generation. The Wisdom House is a refurbished folk home, built using local timber and intended for travelers to use as a resting point. Guests of the Wisdom House are encouraged to share experiences with others, engage in a workshop, or can enjoy concerts before getting lost in the nature of the Forest of Wisdom.
When visiting the Forest of Wisdom, guests will be accompanied by a guide who will explain which areas can be entered to fully enjoy the green moss gardens, shrines, and cedar trees. While the moss is beautiful to enjoy, proper maintenance is required for the moss to thrive. The seven families remaining in Hikyou Village attend to the moss, cleaning the gardens and preventing people or wild animals from stepping on the moss. Their work is not in vain, as the Forest of Wisdom is ranked on the “100 Farm Village Sceneries of Japan”. There is a fee to enter, which is used to help sustain the moss village for future generations. Explore the wisdom and beauty to be found at the Moss Village during one of our exciting Spring Takayama Festival Japan Tours or on a private Japan tour package through Kanazawa and Takayama!
