Aokigahara is a forest, but not just any forest: it is known as the suicide forest. The forest is located at the northwest base of Mt. Fuji. For years, Aokigahara forest has been the most popular spot for suicides in Japan. In fact, it is the second most popular place to commit suicides in the world, first being the Golden Gate Bridge in San Franciso. The local government has made multiple efforts to prevent these suicides by placing signs encouraging people to reconsider their actions but suicides still continue at the forest. Suicide rates are said to increase during March at the end of Japan's fiscal year, for financial reasons. It is said that richness of magnesium in the soil at Aokigahara forest causes compasses to become useless. Also the forest itself is very dense with trees, sometimes even called "Sea of Trees". The denseness of trees and the broken compass can also cause some visitors to get lost within the forest and become stranded. It is advised that tourists do not enter any further into the forest than recommended. When visiting Mt. Fuji in Japan, you may be curious of Aokigahara but you best stay away.
