Meiji Mura (lit: Meiji Village) is one of Japan's largest open air museums, dedicated to Japan's Meiji Era (1868-1912). With over sixty buildings from the Meiji Period, the buildings have a strong Western influence as the Meiji Era marked the end of Japan's feudal ages. Set by Iruka Pond, Meiji Mura fills it's grounds with relocated Meiji Era buildings from across the Japan. Some include the entrance hall of Tokyo's old Imperial Hotel, Kyoto's St. Francis Xavier's Cathedral, the former Kanazawa Prison, Sapporo's telephone exchange, Mie's Rrefectural office, Nagasaki's foreign settlement, traditional sake breweries, hospital buildings, and schools.
Some of the buildings remain in their original form while others have been modified into cafes and stores for the guests of Meiji Mura to enjoy. The village has a bus that runs around the village, a tram, and steam locomotive to navigate around the massive museum grounds. This extensive museum offers numerous buildings and areas for guests to explore the life and feel the culture of the Meiji Period. If you're interested in seeing a blend of Japanese and Western architecture, the Meiji Mura may be the perfect museum to add to your vacation.
