Date Jidaimura is a history theme park on the Japanese Edo Period. The Edo Period was a time period lasting from 1603-1868 when Japan was under the ruling of the Tokugawa shogunate. Edo Period was a critical time period when Japan was under strict control of the Tokugawa family and the country became unified. Date Jidaimura incorporates various aspects of the Edo Period to create a realistic environment as if you are walking through town during that time. The attendants are dressed up in old style Edo clothes, and even guests can dress up as princes, princesses, villagers, and peasants at Utsuroikan where they can get their pictures taken. Jidaimura has many attractions from samurai and ninja shows, Oiran performances (Japanese theater), games to test your ninja skills, and more. The park also has museums to learn about the history of samurais and ninjas as well as to examine some of the weapons these historical people used in fighting. Jidaimura also has many great photo opportunities with features and landscapes reminiscent of the Edo period. There are several restaurants and cafes where you can rest and enjoy traditional soba, mochi, or green tea as the Edo people did in the past.
