Interested in parasites? Then the Meguro Parasitological Museum is just for you. Founded in 1953 by Japanese scientist Dr. Satoru Kamegai, this two story building is the world's only museum devoted to parasites and displays an extensive amount of these odd organisms in jars and bins. With over 45,000 parasites, you'll either be amazed or disgusted by the different organisms preserved until you come across the museum's highlight: the world's longest tapeworm at 8.8 meters. To experience and really get the feel of how long the longest tapeworm is, the museum has a rope of the same length tourists can play with to get a feel for the tapeworm.
The museum is split into two forms. The first floor is an exhibition space dedicated to the overview of parasites around the world. There's information on the life cycle, habits, and history of parasites from around the world. The second floor focuses on parasites that target humans. There are around 300 preserved specimens on display, as well as another 60,000 specimens, 50,000 papers, and 5,000 books on the subject in the museum's research library. In addition to research and displays, the second floor also houses the museum gift-store. Tourists can purchase museum guidebooks, postcards, T-shirts, or even mobile-phone straps with parasites embedded in the acrylic. Because the museum is free to the public and privately owned, the only funds come from donations and gift shop sales. For those into science and biology, a visit to the Meguro Parasitological Museum may be an interesting worthwhile visit.
