Sumida River Fireworks Festival is one of Japan's largest fireworks festivals. Its origin dates back to the Edo Period when fireworks were used to mourn the death yet also celebrate life. Today Sumida River Fireworks attracts almost 1 million spectators who gather to watch beautiful firework creations light up the night sky. The event takes place every fourth Saturday in July over Sumidagawa, or Sumida River. Unlike most firework events in the country, the Sumida River Fireworks Festival is a major competition among firework technicians. Approximately 9,500 fireworks are lit up into the sky, each one competing to be the best performance. The fireworks at the festival display the country's best works, featuring all kinds of different colors, shapes, designs, and patterns. Highly skilled technicians recreate characters such as Pikachu in the night sky using just the fireworks bringing spectators into an awe.
