Beautiful Seasonal Garden in Ueno Toshogu Shrine

Only open twice a year between January to mid February and April to early May, the Ueno Toshogu Shrine's botan (camellia) garden is a beautiful garden tucked away in Ueno Park. Located at the Ueno Toshogu Shrine in Ueno Park, the Peony Garden opened in April 1980 to celebrate the prosperous friendship between Japan and China. The peony flower has a long history in Japan as a flower associated with nobility and wealth. It was often believed the flower is blessed to bring wealth, prosperity, fame, and fortune. Similar to how cherry blossoms and plum trees are popular motifs in Japanese culture, the peony flowers are often referenced in Haiku, art, and family emblems. In the spirit of friendship, the flowers at this garden came from China and are appreciated for the colorful shades of pink, white, and reds.

Given the limited access to the peony garden, we highly recommend adding a stop to the Ueno Toshogu Shrine's botan garden during the Cherry blossom season. While Ueno park is already a popular destination for hanami, the beauty of the cherry blossoms are enhanced when the stunning peonies bloom. Enjoy this spot in Tokyo during a free day on our Spring Cherry Blossom Japan Tours, or add the garden to a custom itinerary for a Flower Japan tour vacation!
