Coming of Age Day

Coming of Age Day is a national Japanese holiday to congratulate those who have reached the age of adulthood, or 20 years old. On the second Monday of January, men and women who have turned of age participate in ceremonial activities as they are welcomed into adulthood. City offices hold ceremonies for their locals and present them with speeches and presents to congratulate them for entering a new chapter in life. The holiday is a time to appreciate the accomplishments made and what's to come in the future for these young adults.

It is customary for women who turn 20 to dress up in a furisode, a kimono-like article of clothing. Unlike a kimono, furisode sleeves are more extravagant and hand down. Women wear their furisode and zori sandals when they attend the ceremonies. Many people do not have practice wearing kimonos and furisode, so they often go to beauty salons to help them get dresses and set their hair for their special day. Many people also get professional photographs taken to keep memory of this day. Men also dress up in hakamas, similar to a kimono, but do so less often than women. It has become common for more men to dress up in a suit and tie for the occasion.

The day is also marked with celebrations after the official ceremonies conclude. It's not uncommon for new adults to go drinking or out with friends afterwords. The holiday is another example as to how much Japan values the different milestones reached in a person's life.
