During the New Years, the Japanese go crazy about fukubukuro, which literally translates to lucky bags. Fukubukuro are special new year goodies bags that are generally sold between January first through third that contain goods worth more than the price you pay for the bag. Many different kinds of stores sell fukubukuro from brand names clothing stores like Uniqlo and Muji to electronics stores such as Apple in Ginza which created buzz when it sold its very own fukubukuro. It's not just stores, as restaurants and cafes also get in on the fukubukuro fun. McDonald's and Starbucks are two companies that offer special coupons and product vouchers, in addition to company branded mugs, shirts, or other small goods.

Fukubukuro vary in price, and can get quite expensive, but the goods inside the back are generally worth many times more than the price one pays.
