Hakone Sekisho

The Hakone Sekisho is a former checkpoint used during the Edo period, serving as the border of the Kanto region. The Hakone Sekisho stood at an important spot along one of the five major roads of Japan leading in and out of Edo, so everyone who passed through would be thoroughly inspected. The checkpoint was restored in 2007 and now serves as a museum to teach visitors about the history of the road travelers used and the checkpoint. The reconstructed checkpoint houses a museum with tools used by checkpoint officials and guards, information about the Tokkaido Trail, and statues of people working through out the building. There is also a training area, living quarters, and more, all to show guests what life was like for the guards and officials who worked and lived at the checkpoint.
