Maple Leaf Shaped Manju

Maple Leaf Shaped Manju

Momiji Manju is a maple leaf shaped manju with red bean paste filling. The manju dough of the Momiji Manju has a pound cake-like texture. Although red bean paste is the most common filling, nowadays other filling such as custard cream, chocolate cream, cream cheese fillings, and others are popular as well. Momiji Manju are some of Hiroshima's most popular souvenirs. They can be purchased at most souvenir shops around town or at Miyajima Island. In addition to prepackaged momiji manju, some stores perform baking demonstrations where you can try a freshly baked momiji manju. Nowadays, some stores even sell "age momiji manju" which are deep fried momiji manju rather than baked. It is interesting to compare the different flavors and textures of the various types of momiji manju.

Although enjoyed year-round, Momiji Manju are especially popular during the autumn season for Koyo. Much like hanamai (cherry blossom viewings) are a past-time in the spring, Koyo is the autumn equivalent. As the leaves turn orange and red, momiji manju are a great snack while enjoying the scenery. Be sure to sample this Hiroshima specialty during any of our Cherry Blossom Japan Tours or Southern Japan Tour Packages available spring or year-round.
