Valentine's Day

In Japan, Valentine's Day is done a little differently. Rather than the men presenting women with chocolate and flowers, it is the women that present men with chocolate. There is also two types of chocolate that goes around on Valentine's Day: giri choco and honmei choco. Giri means obligation or duty, and giri choco is given to men the woman feels obligated to give a chocolate to like her male co-workers, superiors, and friends. Most women who present giri choco buy the chocolates in store and it is not uncommon to see some girls purchasing dozens of these chocolates.

Honemi means true, and therefore honmei choco represents the women's true feelings. Honmei choco is given to the girl's boyfriend, crush, lover, or husband. Many girls hand make these honmei choco rather than buying it to show her love to her partner. Of course, some girls who aren't as skilled at cooking will find a way to make delicious home-made chocolate. Seeing how much effort put into a gift makes receiving the chocolates even more special. After giving her honmei chocolates to the object of their affection, men are expected to reciprocate one month later on March 14th or White Day.
