Otagi Nenbutsu-ji Temple

Arashiyama , a popular tourist destination in Kyoto. There is a small temple called Otagi Nenbutsuji in Okusagano, after crossing the Togetsu Bridge, beyond Tenryuji Temple and Nonomiya Shrine, about 3 kilometers away from Arashiyama station.

Otagi Nenbutsu-ji was built in the 8th century but moved to its current location in 1922. The Senju Kannon which was made in the Kamakura period, is an important cultural property of Japan along with the main hall. A golden Kannon is placed in "Fureai Kannon-do / Ema-do" and you can touch it with your hands. Fureai Kannon is a gentle Buddha who relieves physical and mental pain by touching it.

The biggest highlight of "Otagi Nenbutsu-ji" is about 1,200 Rakan who seem to be having fun. "Otagi Nenbutsu-ji" is also known as the "Temple of 1,200 Rakan". Otagi Nenbutsu-ji was originally located in Higashiyama. However, it was in 1981 that the reconstruction began in earnest at the present location after repeated devastation due to natural disasters.

When the former chief priest called for "Let's fill the precincts with statues of Rakan,". Rakan is a disciple of Buddha, a saint who conveyed the teachings of Buddha. Initially, the target was 500, all the amateurs cooperated in carving Rakan, and 10 years later, there were about 1,200 statues. Most of the people who wanted to carve the Rakan were women, they wanted to memorialize their husbands and children. These Aakan were carved by general worshipers with all their heart in prayer for the reconstruction of the temple. The handmade Rakan by the general public are very straightforward and have the appeal of attracting viewers. Each Rakan are unique, no one is the same. some mouth wide open toward the sky, some laugh happily, and some smiling with a gentle face. The heartwarming appearance will make you feel at ease and get the power of a smile.
