Kaki-no-tane

Kaki-no-tane is a popular rice cracker snack of Japan consumed by people of all ages. Kaki-no-tane is referred to by several names including Kakipi-, Pi-kaki, and Pi-pi-kaki. It gets its name from looking like the seed of a persimmon or kaki and the pi refers to the peanuts. Kaki-no-tane has a soy sauce flavor and is served with peanuts to balance out the flavors. While enjoyed by all ages, kaki-no-tane is a popular bar snack and goes great with an ice-cold glass of beer. Today, there are several flavors of kaki-no-tane such as wasabi, plum, and yuzu flavor. Some of these flavors are limited editions and can only be found in certain areas of Japan where the ingredients are local specialties. Although you can purchase kaki-no-tane almost anywhere, it originates from Nagaoka city in Niigata and has grown in popularity over the years. While some argue it's ideal to eat kaki-no-tane with six pieces to four (six kaki, four peanuts), comments from a famous actress advocating for a 7:3 ratio which prompted a national voting campaign. Regardless of the golden ration needed to enjoy kaki-no-tane, it's hard to stop munching on these little snacks once you get started.
