Ninja or shinobi was a covert agent or mercenary of feudal Japan specializing in unorthodox arts of war. The functions of the ninja included espionage, sabotage, infiltration, intelligence-gathering, assassination, as well as combat in certain situations. Ninja history is rich in Japan, although there are few official records of their actions. The ninja had their own hierarchy system. Jōnin (upper person) were the highest rank, followed by chūnin (middle person), and the bottom are genin. Among the ninja, there were three clans that set themselves apart. They were the Iga, Koga, and Kazama clans. Each clan is well-known in Japan's history for their superior technique and involvement in various wars and battles.
The ninja, using covert methods of waging war, were contrasted with the samurai, who had strict rules about honor and combat. Japanese samurai looked down on the ways of the ninja, deeming their acts dishonorable. Still, the ninja found work for local lords and leaders to carry out assassination, espionage, sabotage, and even psychological warfare against the enemy. The legends of the ninja warriors continue to inspire artists and pop-culture, such as the hit Anime series Naruto.
