The Most Beautiful of Festival Floats

If you have heard of the Takayama Festival, then you may know about the large float procession that occurs during the festivities. Regarded as one of the three most beautiful festivals in Japan, these floats have played a big part in helping the festival reach such regard. The floats are certainly a highlight of the festival, ornately detailed from the images to the structure itself, and is a tradition that was started in 1718 with the floats themselves registered as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Being an integral part of the Takayama Festival as well as the city’s history, needing a safe and proper place to store such important items is necessary. Introducing the Takayama Yatai Kaikan, or Float Exhibition Hall, where visitors can see and marvel at the floats up close as well as learn about the history behind them and the festival. There is a total of 18 floats with approximately 4 floats being replaced every 4 months.
