Tokyo Skytree is one of Tokyo's newest additions to the city's skyline since it's completion in 2011. Skytree is a television broadcasting tower open to the public with multiple observation decks, shopping complexes, restaurants, and even an aquarium: Sumida Aquarium. Skytree has grown to become one of the top tourist spots in Tokyo, with many coming for shopping, sightseeing, or as a date spot. Even without going to the top of the tower, there are numerous attractions to enjoy at this TV tower. Formerly the tallest tower in the world, Tokyo Tower is currently behind the Burj Khalifa building in Dubai at a staggering height of 634.0 meters (2,080 ft). The height of 634 meters was selected on purpose, because the first letter of each number spells Musashi, an old name of the area Tokyo Tower currently stands (6-Mu, 3-Sa, 4-Shi).
Built with the ideas of blending futuristic designs with Japan's traditional beauty, the tower stands as a catalyst to revitalize the city and is built to be safe and secure in the event of earthquakes, tsunamis, and other natural disasters. Skytree is painted in a unique blueish-white color, reminiscent to the traditional Japanese color aijiro (藍白), appropriately called "Skytree White." The light color is perfect for illumination events, when the tower is lit up with stunning visuals and illumination patterns. The name "Skytree" was actually voted on by the Japanese public with 30% in support of the name (majority).
The first observation deck takes you up 350 meters and the second deck goes even higher to 450 meters. Visitors take an impressively fast elevator ride up to the first deck and if they wish, they can continue their journey up the tower to the second deck from there. Both decks are great for panoramic views of Tokyo, especially during the night when the city is lit up with lights. The observation decks do require a fee to access, but is a highly recommended activity to enjoy while in Tokyo.
