A Sumo Wrestler's Meal

A Sumo Wrestler's Meal

Chankonabe is a special type of Japanese nabe (stew) eaten by sumo wrestlers in vast quantities as part of a weight-gain diet. The stew is made of soup (either dashi or chicken broth with mirin) and includes whatever is available, as there is no formal recipe. The majority of the stew is made of proteins like chicken or fish, with tofu and veggies making up the rest of the dish. A healthy dish packed with proteins and fresh greens, sumo wrestlers eat chanko nabe in large amounts at a time, done in order to quickly gain weight. The senior sumo wrestlers and their guests help themselves first, followed by the younger wrestlers. The leftover broth can be used for noodles, making chankonabe a versatile meal that can be enjoyed.
