Kaiten Sushi restaurants are sushi restaurants where the sushi dishes are presented to the customers on a revolving conveyor belt. Sometimes called sushi trains or conveyor belt sushi, customers can freely pick the dishes they like as they pass in front of them. If customers wish to order a special roll or dish, such as miso soup or a rice bowl, the dish will either be delivered by your server or brought to you via conveyor belt with a tag indicating your seat number. Some restaurants will even use a special bullet train
plate to bring your meal to you for added fun. Let your server know what you want, and wait for your order to zoom out on a special plate meant to look like a speeding bullet train. While most sushi restaurants will only serve pieces of sashimi or rolls, kaiten sushi restaurants tend to offer a greater choice in variety. Kaiten sushi restaurants are also more likely to come up with specialized flavors you may not find in other restaurants, like a Philadelphia Roll, Spicy-Salmon Skin Roll, or even a Jalapeno & Spicy Tuna Roll. Kaiten sushi is also popular in other countries besides Japan, and is sometimes offered at Japanese restaurants like Benihana's or Kula Revolving Sushi in the United States.
At the end of your meal, the number of plates are counted to determine the final cost. Each plate is typically assigned different colors or pattern, each associated to a different price point. Most kaiten sushi restaurants set their dishes between 100 to 500 yen, though in cases of special orders or extra lavish dishes, the prices can be a bit more expensive. However, the meals are typically less expensive than other sushi restaurants. Kaiten sushi is a great way to enjoy sushi on a budget and is a great experience if you have the chance. Kaiten sushi places also offer other Japanese appetizers, making it a great option for your last night meal in Japan in case you wanted some Kaarage, edamame, ramen, or rice bowls to accompany your meal.
