The Otaru Music Box Museum is one of the largest museum shops in Japan with a collection of over 3,000 types of music boxes. The museum's building is housed in Otaru City's historic architecture and inside are a wide variety of music boxes and other original goods. The first floor is filled with an assorted range of music boxes, such as the Otaru Music Box Museum’s original items including glittering jewelry case music boxes, glass angel music boxes, Sushi music boxes, and steam clock music boxes. The second floor is home to carefully made, hand-crafted music boxes like toreutic and Shippo-yaki (cloisonne work) music boxes. The third floor features items meant to sooth your spirit, such as Japanese miscellaneous goods and Japanese-style music boxes.
In addition to the three floors, the museum also offers an expansive gift shop to purchase music boxes and workshop classes. In addition to learning how to make music boxes, there are also classes on making Tonbodama, stained glass, pressed flowers, and sandblast crafts.
Located in one of the most scenic areas in all of Northern Japan, the Otaru Music Box Museum is a must when exploring the canal city of Otaru.
