Opened in 1987 as the only beer museum in Japan, the Sapporo beer museum aims to provide visitors with a varied knowledge of beer and brewing techniques. As the first brewery in Japan originating in 1876, Sapporo brewery was operated under the Hokkaido Development Agency's advice from foreign experts who happened to find natural hops in Sapporo. The company has long since expanded and has become one of the most beloved beers in all Japan. The smooth flavor and light pour makes Sapporo beer a staple in Japanese culture, and one of the top choices next to Kirin or Asahi to accompany a piping hot bowl of Ramen or after a long day in the office.
At the museum, enjoy exhibits and displays on the history of Sapporo Breweries and Japan's growing beer industry. The museum also includes information about the development of Hokkaido in addition to facts about Japan's oldest beer brewery. Together with the old red brick Hokkaido Government Office, the Sapporo Beer Museum is housed in the same red-brick style, now regarded as a precious cultural legacy of the Meiji Era. Thanks to the combined history shared by the museum and the scenic architecture have earned Sapporo Beer Museum as an official "Hokkaido Heritage" designation.
After you browse the exhibits, why not try fresh draft beer straight from the brewery? The Sapporo Beer Gardens are located right next to the museum, perfect for sampling a cold mug of Sapporo with Hokkaido's famous Genghis Khan Mongolian barbecue dish.
