Chikurinji Temple in Kochi City of Kochi Prefecture is the 31st temple along the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage. Said to have been founded by Gyōki in the early 8th century, this temple sits at the top of Mt. Godai east of Kochi's downtown. From the top of Mt. Godai, travelers can see lovely panoramic views of Kochi City before heading to the temple grounds.
Chikurinji's temple includes an expansive treasure hall and a breathtaking five-story pagoda. The treasure hall includes 17 Buddhist statues all designated as Important Cultural Properties and displays important temple scrolls. The pagoda is based at the top of the hill and is the temple's most prominent landmark. The pagoda can be seen even at the temple's lower grounds and is a popular spot for photos.
