Koenji Awaodori Dance Festival

The Koenji Awaodori Dance Festival is one of many awaodori festivals held throughout Japan. The festival takes place on the last weekend of August and is a highly anticipated event every year. The festival itself, first taking place in 1957, was initially held to revitalize the local shopping areas but grew larger and larger as the city began to modernize. Today, the festival has grown to represent Tokyo's summer, attracting over 1 million spectators and over 10,000 dancers for both days. Usually taking place during the late afternoon, spectators can expect temperatures to cool a little until the end of the festivities for that day (~8:00 pm). The festival is also a means of not only preserving the culture but also progressing it and connecting various regions/peoples through a mutual passion for awaodori.
