Dragon Kites | Nagasaki

Goshima Baramon is a traditional kite craft from the Nagasaki Prefecture. It is a hand painted kite featuring bold designs like dragons or warriors. The kites are created for boys whose parents take them out on May 5th (Children's Day, formerly Boy's Day) to fly the kites to pray for healthy, energetic sons. These days some parents order customized kites for their children with their sons' names painted on the kites. While kite-flying and fighter kites don't hold as much popularity in other parts of Japan, Nagasaki is one of the only places in Japan where kite-flying events are held. Interesting, while most fighter-kite competitions focus on cutting down the opponent's line, Japanese kite-fighting in Nagasaki focuses on bringing down the opponents kite entirely. Teams must maneuver and navigate their kite away from danger while dealing damage to the defending teams.

Although kite-flying isn't as popular in the United States and Japan as it is in other parts of the world, Japan Deluxe Tours is more than happy to help kite-fliers and fighter-kites find competition while on vacation in Nagasaki. Enjoy a custom vacation package in Nagasaki for the competitions, or arrange for your own Goshima Baramon kite souvenir while exploring the highlights of Southern Japan!
