Popular Japanese Dish with a Glass of Cold Beer

Yakitori, or grilled chicken skewers, is a popular Japanese dish, commonly enjoyed with a glass of nice cold beer. Bite sized pieces of various parts of the chicken are stuck on the skewer and grilled above charcoal. Popular choices of yakitori include thigh, skin, breast, liver, wings, and others. It is inexpensive, often around 100 to 200 yen a skewer depending on the kind. For most people, six to eight skewers should be enough for a filling meal, especially with a delicious, ice-cold beer.

Aside from chicken, there are also other variations of yakitori such as vegetable yakitori, which usually has okura and shiitake mushrooms, and quail eggs. There's sometimes meat balls and other, non-chicken proteins depending on where you go. Yakitori is served at restaurants, izakaya, and yakitori stands in town. Yakitori is also featured in some anime and Japanese dramas as a great post-work option for drinks and food. It isn't uncommon to see businessmen and office workers at a yakitori restaurant after the work day ends.
