Ekiben (JDT Recommends)

With public transportation being the most used form of transportation, trains are vital for the Japanese. With so many people spending so much time on trains, train stations and the trains itself sell bento boxes. These bento boxes sold at train stations are called ekiben. Different stations sell different types of ekiben, usually using their local products in the bento. For example, an ekiben from Yokohama which is famous for its chinatown includes shumai and in the city of Matsuzaka where the famous Matsuzaka beef comes from, most bentos use their infamous beef. Ekiben can vary in price but can be very reasonable, starting from 300 yen to about 1500 yen, but some going up to over 3000 yen. Trying out ekibens from different cities might be a good way to try the local cuisines and specialties of major towns in Japan.
