Korokke is a popular dish in Japan, originating from croquettes from France. It is a deep fried dish consisting of mashed potato, meat and vegetables mixed and pounded into a patty then covered in flour, eggs, breadcrumbs, then fried. Korokke does not need to consist of meat and can be a plain korokke with just mashed potato, but can also vary from chopped up meat to chopped up shrimp. Another popular variation is the cream korokke. Cream korokke does not use mashed potatoes and instead mixes seafood into a thickened cream sauce as the filling. Rather than the patty like korokke, cream korokkes have a cylindrical shape. Especially popular kinds of cream korokke are the kani cream korokke
, which mixes crab with the cream sauce and corn cream korokke
which mixes corn into the cream sauce.
Korokke can be found at local street vendors and convenience stores at for about 100-200 yen. Korokke can also be found in sandwiches and burgers at convenience stores and fast food chains. Some restaurants also serve korokke, especially the crab cream korokke which can be quite costly depending on their ingredients and quality.
