Dedicated to one of the most famous Japanese painters from the Edo Period and to this day, the Obuse Hokusai Museum in Obuse-machi, Nagano prefecture is dedicated to the illustrious works of Katsushika Hokusai. Hokusai was considered one of 4 big Ukiyo-e Painters in Edo period with some of his works reaching international fame and popularity to this day. His best known work is the woodblock print series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji which includes the international recognized print The Great Wave off Kanagawa.
Hokusai spent several of the final years of his life in Obuse before he died at the age of 88. A vast collection of paintings and works from Hokusai are on display at the museum. Some of his paintings can only be viewed at the museum, including his impressive collection of Japanese hanging scrolls, ukiyo-e prints, and folding screens. Some of his most famous work is on display on the museum's ceiling via parade float. However, Hokusais greatest ceiling painting is said to be on Ganshoin Temple located nearby. Just a brief 10 minute bus ride from the center of town and guests can enjoy the temple's main hall, featuring a breathtaking ceiling mural of a phoenix.
