Otokoyama Sake

The Otokoyama Sake Brewery Museum is a museum that tells the history and culture of sake brewing, one of Japan's traditional industries, with 350 years of history. The museum exhibits valuable materials, documents, and sake vessels from the Edo period, and during the brewing season, visitors can watch a part of the sake brewing process. The tasting and store corner offers a wide variety of limited-edition products from the brewery. Along with Furano, Biei, and Asahiyama Zoo, the brewery is one of Hokkaido's most popular tourist attractions, attracting approximately 200,000 visitors a year.

Otokoyama was created by San'emon Yamamoto, a sake brewer in Itami during the Edo period under the trade name “Momenya”. At the time, this sake was a special item used to present to the shogunate. In addition, it was such a popular sake that it appeared in Kabuki and Ukiyo-e prints of the time.

The museum consists of three floors, each offering a different experience. On the first floor, you can try Otokoyama's sake. “Otokoyama” was the first sake in the world to win a gold medal at the Monde Selection. Since then, it has won the gold award for 46 consecutive years. On the second floor, you can learn about the history of sake brewing in Japan through Ukiyo-e. Here, historical materials supporting the origin and existence of "Otokoyama" are exhibited. On the third floor, many tools used for sake brewing in the past are on display. You can also learn more about them in the VTR corresponding to English.

In addition to representative brands and regular products, seasonal sake and sake only available at the Otokoyama Sake Brewery Museum are also sold at the store corner. There are also other products such as amazake (sweet sake) and cheese made from Otokoyama sake lees, which are just right for souvenirs.
